CNN —It’s not just ocean heat that’s affecting marine life – new research shows extremely cold events are welling up and causing mass mortalities. And the same planet-warming pollution that’s driving the climate crisis is likely to blame for these “killer events” on the other end of the temperature spectrum. The world’s oceans have been plagued by unprecedented heat over the past year, fueling concerns for marine life. “Climate change is actually really complex,” said Nicolas Lubitz, lead author of the study and a researcher at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. He said seasonal upwelling events are common in that area, with water temperature dropping quickly.

Swimmers at the beach might not be excited to see the 14-foot (4.3-meter) white shark, but scientists following LeeBeth's movements are thrilled that the big fish's epic journey could provide valuable clues to help the species. White sharks, often referred to as great whites, were made famous by the hit movie “Jaws.” They roam the ocean searching for their favorite food, marine mammals, and were once hunted without discrimination. They watched as she made history in late February by traveling further into the Gulf than any previously tracked white shark. “We don't know how many white sharks travel that far west, but it's a good indication they do,” Winton said. The conservancy paired up with fishing charter Outcast Sport Fishing of Hilton Head, South Carolina, to tag LeeBeth.

Scientists witnessed one of the hunters, a male orca known as Starboard, single-handedly kill a 2.5-meter (8.2-foot) juvenile white shark within a two-minute time frame last year. “Over two decades of annual visits to South Africa, I’ve observed the profound impact these killer whales have on the local white shark population. A second great white shark carcass washes ashore in June near Hartenbos, South Africa. It wasn’t until 2022 that aerial footage first captured the orcas killing a great white shark, Towner said. The kill by a lone orca might have been made possible by the prey’s smaller size as a juvenile great white, according to the study.

I set out to record the migration routes of silky sharks, named for their smooth skin. Instead, in a story filled with twists and turns, I ended up documenting the rare phenomenon of a shark regenerating a dorsal fin. Silky sharks are commonly found in the open ocean and grow to be 10 feet long. In the many shark photos he sent, I noticed a silky shark with an oddly shaped dorsal fin. AdvertisementBased on the healing rate calculated in my study, we just might see his dorsal fin grow back to 100% its original size.

Many types of life live within the waters including fish, octopus, sea slugs, large amounts of kelp, and sharks that are not found anywhere else in the world. Among those sharks is an elusive type known as the puffadder shyshark. Yet the sharks are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with their population in decline. The team developed a system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help safeguard the sharks. “And that’s what we’re trying to do here.”Watch the video at the top of this page to learn more about Cape RADD and Fin Spotter.
